                                                                 wr_CheckDigit

Scenario: You are a small operation, and would like to issue state-of-the-art bar-coded ID cards to employees, that are also to be used as library cards.  Laser barcode readers are top notch when it comes to accuracy.  Check digits are still  essential parts of a barcode or credit card/ATM account numbers. A check digit can reduce false entries by 90%.  If you don't use check digits and an id number is hand entered incorrectly by the cashier of your cafeteria then your "lunch is free".

wr_CheckDigit is a small utility that lets you experiment and calculate various check digit algorithms.   It can also produce lists of numbers including the check digit to be used by your database manager for existing employee/account numbers.  Better yet: add a new field containing a disposable account number (with check digits, of course), that can be replaced easily if lost or stolen.  Thus never revealing permanent account numbers but protecting the privacy of your patrons.  To download wr_CheckDigit now, click here.

                                                                            wrCHpoA

Notice: This utility is superceeded by wr_MxL (click here).
Updated: Specify your own values to be changed.
As a busy EX LIBRIS Voyager system's librarian you are switching endlessly between production and training databases, requiring you to manually edit your system file "voyager.ini" and the ports appropriately.  Did you forget  to switch the .ini file back to the production database, and ran some time confused in the training database?  With this small utility wrCHpoA you no longer need to hand-edit that system file but a simple double-click on a shortcut will run any module in either the production or the training mode.

To override this utility's hard coded values, you can now create your own configuration file and specify any value/string to be replaced on-the-fly in your voyager.ini file.
2005-02-14

Upon installation, wrCHpoA will create a folder on your desktop, that contains all shortcuts to your most often used EX LIBRIS Voyager system modules to access the production databases and -neatly separated in a different folder- other shortcuts to run in the training databases.  To review the HELP file click here, to download the wrCHpoA utility now, click here

    Update                                                                    wrVOYutl
Utilities for the EX LIBRIS Voyager system's librarian to automate patron file maintenance of the EX LIBRIS Voyager library software.  Note: Modules (1) and (2) are available to you in the download.

Important: You must have read and understand the patron SIF structure as illustrated in Voyager's "Technical Manual" in order to make the best use of the utilities below.  Failure to do so, will waste your time figuring out, what went wrong if you plugged values into internal fields, that will be ignored when SIFmaker creates a new SIF file.  Please also note: "Absolutely FREE software" has "Absolutely NO Support"

(1) SIFbreaker: Convert a native Voyager patron database file of "ptrnextr" to a useable PC file format as CSV (=comma separated values)  which easily imports into your PC's spreadsheet or database programs, allowing you to further examine or manipulate your patron database.
(2)  SIFmaker: After you made changes to the file obtained in (1) on your PC, save it  and convert it back to the native Voyager format, upload it to your production server and update your patron production database with Voyager's "ptrnupdt" program.

SIFbreaker/maker file cycle:
Voyager ptrnextr --> SIFbreaker --> (edit in spread sheet application & save as CSV file ) --> SIFmaker --> Voyager ptrnupdt
SIFmaker can only convert files produced by SIFbreaker.  To convert your own CSV files see below for SIFconverter.

Version 2002-07-14b: Notes field upload fixed.  This problem only occurred when there were less than 3 address blocks.
Current version: 2002-07-14f

For availability of following modules contact click here:
(3)
SIFexpirer: Take the last file created by Voyager's "ptrnextr", transfer to your PC, compare to the last registrar's db extract on your PC, set patron's expiration dates no longer enrolled, upload the resulting file back to the production server and update with Voyager's "ptrnupdt".
(4)
SIFconverter: Custom converter to take your CSV data file from your registrar's database as input, migrate patrons to patron groups, convert to the native Voyager SIF file, upload to your Voyager production server and update with Voyager's "ptrnupdt" to load your database with patrons.

How To Use:
wrVOYutl uses "Drag & Drop" convenience for most actions (it can't get easier): Review the table below.  To download the wrVOYutl utility now, click here.  To review the HELP file - click here, to view screen shots click here.

         wrBOO

Scenario: Your workgroup is using one single networked spreadsheet or database.  Network folders are backed up daily.  However, one of the work group members deletes a column and saves the file with the missing column back unknowingly.   This mistake is discovered a week later - after all network backups have been overwritten.
Usage: After configuring a wrBOO-shortcut it will make a safety copy of the accessed file before starting the file's application.  This is your immediate fall-back copy should the contents become "corrupted" during the session that follows.  You can revert to this last copy immediately without bothering your overworked network administrator or time delays.  To read more about it click here for the wrBOO HELP file.  Click here to download the wrBOO utility now.

         wrSUtil

When my children approached me with Middle School math and fractions, I started out putting some very simple utilities together.  It also allowed me to give my children more problem exercises and a correct result along with it.  My daughter used the program to check her results eagerly, and then later gave exercises to my son, by using this program to check his results of the extra exercises.  This software package contains a bundle of very tiny programs.

Prime number factorization
Enter a number, the program then returns factors, that are prime numbers, and when multiplied with each other will result in the number you've entered.   Shows screen after screen full of prime numbers for your entertainment.

Division with remainder

Instead of a decimal, the result of an uneven division displays only whole numbers.

Compare fractions
Enter 2 fractions as is, and show the result of the comparison {smaller - equal - greater than}.

Fraction calculator

Add fractions (subtract, multiply & divide) and the result is also a fraction - not a decimal.

Smallest term fraction
A fraction with the smallest possible denominator.

Date calculator

Enter a date and enter how many days, and it will figure out the new date, or enter 2 dates and it figures out the days in between (or hours, minutes and seconds).  To read more about

                                                                        wr_LCclassSort

This 32-bit PC Windows CONSOLE program produces a true sort order of your "LC Class Call Numbers" consistently not accidentally.  No longer will you have to put up with a bizarre ASCII sort order like: BT20, BT252, BT3 ..., but correctly: BT3, BT20, BT252 ... (The depicted call numbers are for a mere illustration).  The program accepts "Drag & Drop" (can't it be easier?) CSV files (with the first field being the LC Class Call Numbers), or text files, in which the Call Numbers occupy the first 45 characters of each record (or up to a user defined stop character).  Make sure to read help first before operating this one-of-a-kind program.

wrBatchRename

To keep the university's picture gallery organized (and produce unique filenames) proceed as follows with all digital image files:  Create a folder (on your desktop) using the event's date in ISO 8601 format (July 5, 2003 = 2003-07-05).  Then upload all digital images into this folder.  Select the desired image folder, and from the right-click menu SEND TO (can't it be easier?), select "Batch rename all files in a folder" and all files in that folder will be renamed using the folder's name as base name, with a 3-digit number appended to it.

For above example images will be renamed to 2003-07-05-001.jpg, 2003-07-05-002.jpg and so on.  Upload folder to the (internet) server, and link to a picture gallery table to complete this action.  Other OPAC cataloging records can now link to individual files.  This tiny utility exists only in your right-click SEND TO menu.   Reverting to original filenames is possible by using the recovery feature.

Time Sheet Calculator

When turning in time sheet time comes around, counting with your fingers may not be good enough, besides, do you religiously check for daily/weekly maximum hours that your work studies are allowed to work?  You can also use it, to compile the weekly hour schedule for your student (see also "Weekly Employee Scheduler / Planner"), that is better than re-calculate all hours for the week should the schedule change during the year.  This is a "famous maker spreadsheet application" (FMSA) worksheet that does it for you.  You enter your institution's limits for daily/weekly work hours, then the student schedule, and you're done.  For a screen shot, click here.  To download wr_TSC click here.

Quick Look-Up Utility

You are keeping track of your (PDF files) electronic Reserve items' passwords in a worksheet along with other important data that lead to the creation of these items.  Instead of letting support staff access this worksheet directly, train on how to use the FIND command, and how to limit the search to one particular column and avoid the potential corruption of that file and what-not-else instead you could  use this tiny Windows utility:  Look up a value of one cell, display the contents of a corresponding cell in the same data set.  I found also good use in reporting missing items of a collection after taking inventory.  Because the collection is arranged by sequential in-house Call Numbers you would enter the number of the empty shelf space, and see whether this item was inventoried, or whether the item can be considered safely as being lost and further action taken.  If you are using consecutive order numbers or Call Numbers at work then you might find this utility useful.  For a screen shot, click here, to review the HELP click here, but to download wr_QLU click here.

Can you visualize an image with a diagonal of 43 1/4 inches?

Do you find it to be easier to visualize a picture with the dimensions of 24 x 36 in. (diagonal = 43 1/4 in.)?

This tiny utility calculates the widths and heights for a given diagonal of images. Popular aspect ratios of photo paper,  digital camera, HDTV, monitor, TV and anamorphic movie formats are then computated.  Instead of basing dimensions upon the diagonal – you may also enter the width and it will figure out the height (or vice-versa) according to the various aspect ratios. You can enter your own aspect ratio for given diagonals, widths or height

Set dedicated printer as "Default Printer" before launching applications

Is your application not capable of automatically switching to a dedicated printer?

Ex Libris Voyager users:
Want to make sure your staff uses PDF creation when processing notifications in VOYAGER REPORTER client?  Want to make sure, your VOYAGER CIRCULATION client connects automatically to a receipt printer, regardless of the current Default Printer?

No matter, what application that needs a specific Default Printer to be set up beforehand, save yourself frustration of your staff forgetting switching to a dedicated printer and create a shortcut generated by
wr_SetDefaultPrinter that will switch the Default Printer before launching your applications.  Setting up is a piece of cake:  After starting this tiny utility, select HELP then SET-UP and a simple configuration screen will guide you through the process of creating the desired shortcut on either your desktop or on the desktop of all users.  All without hacking an INI file.

Ex Libris Voyager users:  This tiny utility is set up to work out of the box with the Voyager REPORTER client installed in the default installation folder and a PDF printer driver installed prior on first use.  But you can configure your shortcut to any of your liking: follow the above set-up instructions (HELP -> SET-UP - see above).
